As a new fourth grader at Woodlawn, Gavin worried about how the students would welcome him and what his classes would be like. "I remember visiting and being a little nervous about how the kids would react to me being here," admits Gavin. "But what surprised me the most was that I made friends really quickly and the teachers really welcomed me. My biggest fear was that I would not make any friends, but that just did not happen!"
We asked Gavin about his favorite new experiences at Woodlawn, and after a long (long) pause, the answer: Everything! He listed all sorts of things he's been exposed to for the first time in school — everything from his favorite classes to having different subject teachers to collaboration with his classmates on projects and service learning. "I really like going to Thomasboro Academy (the 4th grade's service partner)," says Gavin. "It's sometimes challenging because the kids are shy and don't talk a lot but its fun helping them learn about different things and you end up being their friend."
When it comes to being inside the classroom, Gavin isn't shy about saying he LOVES math and science at Woodlawn. "If there's ever anything I don't understand in class, Mr Jones (MJ, as he calls him) has a way of explaining things really well and I love that. I also like that we sometimes work together on projects and share ideas. Everyone has ideas to share."
As we continue to talk, it's becoming obvious his friends are waiting outside for him to continue their game of foursquare. He looks outside with a smile on his face and says, "I really like being outside more often." And so that we do not deprive him (or his friends) of that outside play, we ask him one final question: What gets you excited about coming to school? No long pauses here— he quickly blurts out, "I get to learn something new every day!"
Gavin is currently a sixth grader at Woodlawn.
