Distinctive Elements

Common Hour
Common Hour happens once a week and provides Middle School students the opportunity to come together across the grade levels. Students are given the opportunity to share announcements and lead activities for the Middle student body. From pumpkin painting to cookie decorating - new seasonal traditions are created during this time. Twice a month students meet in small advisory teams with a teacher advisor.
Common Hour serves to: foster inclusion among peers; garner friendships with those outside the immediate peer circle; and to create a camaraderie within the Middle School family.

Overnight Trips
Middle School students hit the road for overnight field trips that deepen their learning. Sixth grade students experience nature at Tremont in the Great Smoky Mountains. Seventh graders travel to the coast and participate in the Sound to Sea program in Salter Path, NC. To culminate their study of American History, eighth grade students spend a week in Washington, D.C.

Honor Code
Our Honor Code states: "On my honor, I will conduct myself with personal and academic integrity." Woodlawn’s community of mutual trust and respect is grounded in the Code of Honor. An honor code helps students understand the importance of honesty, integrity, and respect.

Life Skills
Understanding how to best tackle life skills can be tricky as adolescents navigate change during the Middle School years. Through weekly classes, Middle School students discuss life skills and topics relevant to Middle School life with our school counselor.

International Travel
Through the international travel program at Woodlawn, Middle School students are immersed in a culture through the art, architecture, history, language, food, and traditions. Students learn to appreciate the challenges and pleasant surprises of traveling in a foreign land. Middle School students have an opportunity to travel abroad every year.

Project Presentations
Projects culminate in a presentation or performance to an audience so that students can highlight what they have learned at the end of each project. Project presentations offer students multiple opportunities to practice their public speaking skills.

Field Trips
Frequent off campus experiences such as field trips and community service opportunities allow our students to learn in real-world settings. Field experiences are an integral part of project work and we believe that students should be exposed to authentic learning opportunities and learn from experts in the area. Through service learning, Middle School students regularly visit their partner organizations in the community to serve and understand the impact individuals and groups can make locally and globally.

Woodlawn Day
Woodlawn's oldest tradition comes once a year, early in the fall. In honor of Dr. George Stinson (the original land owner of Woodlawn's historic campus), we center the day around celebrating the history of our campus.19th century games on the field, gardening, tours of the historic Stinson Hall led by our own Mrs. Lolla, and square dancing are enjoyed by everyone.

Go Green!
Go Green has a dual meaning at Woodlawn. Our school colors are green and white, so on spirit days, you will see our Trailblazers showing support with green shirts and even green hair! But it is also a daily reminder of our focus on sustainable practices and helps us all remember to live lightly on the Earth! Go Green!
